Richard Gere's guitar collection to be auctioned by Christie's, NY

  Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Richard Gere is a man of many interests. Besides oxygen bars, few knew of his interest in guitars, let alone music. In the long line of actors who are also musicians, Richard Gere does not necessarily make the list. But the actor's personal collection of guitars is expected to sell for $1 million anyway, when presented at an auction by Christie's, New York on Oct. 11th. Gere, best known for his rolls in An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Women, acquired over time the collection of guitars with marquee names such as C.F. Martin, Gibson, Fender, Gretsch and Epiphone, as well as a selection of amplifiers, and iconic guitars that belonged to Albert King, Peter Tosh and James D'Aquisto. “I’ve had a love affair with guitars since I was a kid," Gere said in a release. "They have been my true friends through the best and worst of times. I never planned to put together a collection, I just bought ones that I liked, the ones that sounded good and played well." The collection was under-wraps until now.
